Academic Advisor Job Summary:
Simmons University is looking for an Academic Advisor (“Advisor”) to join the Undergraduate Advising team. Reporting to the Associate Director of Undergraduate Advising, the Advisor will be responsible for advising a caseload of first-year nursing students, overseeing the placement exam process, supporting student-athletes as the liaison with Athletics, and overseeing the department's social media accounts. As a member of the Office of Undergraduate Advising, the Academic Advisor will strive to support the University's core values by creating innovative ideas to promote the office, prepare students for life's work, and cross boundaries to create opportunities.

The ideal candidate will possess strong time management, customer service, problem-solving, interpersonal skills, technology savvy, and have experience running peer mentor programs. Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary academic advisor for a caseload of first-year nursing students;
• Support student-athletes by conducting workshops for sports groups and being a liaison with Athletics for Undergraduate Advising;
• Oversee the department's social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook;
• Monitor and advise students in your caseload to ensure satisfactory grades and GPA requirements, students understand academic policies, as well as course planning/registration;
• Regularly meet and collaborate with the Nursing Department to support nursing students
• Establishes and maintains ongoing contact with students through a variety of communication methods, including telephone, email, online workshops, e-newsletters, blogs, Zoom, and social media platforms
• Manage the office newsletter and assist with making room reservations for special advising events
• Oversee the placement exam process throughout the academic year for math and foreign languages
• Collaborate with the Modern Language and Literature Department to ensure the language placement exam are administered and scores are tracked accurately
• Act as the liaison between the external placement exam vendor on behalf of Simmons
• Understand the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.;
• Stay abreast of changing institutional information including new programs, course changes, important dates, costs, and updates in university-wide initiatives and policies;
• Contribute to the organization and delivery of general programming for undergraduate students;
• Become a Strengths Champion and utilize Strengths when appropriate during advising sessions with students
• Actively connect students to faculty and academic department advising, support services, and programming, to help students make the most of their experience
• Attend weekly departmental staff meetings as well as regular Community of Practice (COP) meetings for all PLAN Advisors
• Collaborate with the Associate Director as a Starfish Administrator to conduct training, run reports, data entry, and utilize new tools to measure the effectiveness and use of Starfish as needed.
• Utilize Starfish to submit student notes from each advising session and manage flag alerts for at-risk student populations and students within your first-year advising caseload;
• Assist in the implementation of advising and registration for incoming undergraduate students during each orientation session, fall and spring registration months as well as June Advising Month for new students;
• Develop and facilitate support and skill building workshops for undergraduate students
• Participate in departmental and campus wide committees as assigned
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree plus previous experience involving student contact in a student services role;
• Master's degree in a related field preferred.
• Experience utilizing Starfish or similar early alert tools is a plus
• Experience in connecting and building rapport with students;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Ability to successfully resolve student issues from request through resolution;
• Experience with Google mail a plus;
