Overview
Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:
The Dean serves as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Academic Officer of the Schools of Nursing, overseeing two geographical sites (LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post) and reporting directly to the Executive Dean or Health Professions and Nursing. The Dean provides leadership and vision for the Schools while managing all matters pertaining to students, faculty, staff, and unit based operational resources to ensure that the program continues to excel and grow while maintaining all necessary standards of accreditation. The Dean serves as the primary representative for the Schools at LIU and within the wider community and is responsible for driving the advancement of the overall vision for the Schools by securing external funding, providing budgetary oversight, and ultimately ensuring that resources and aspirations align to create a coherent operational framework.
The successful candidate will have a strong track record of leadership within an academic setting and pertaining to the relevant educational area, will be adept in monitoring and responding to trends across education and industry, and capable of developing and implementing a comprehensive plan to achieve strategic expansion and enrollment growth. The successful candidate must be able to catalyze partnerships, expand research efforts, strengthen academic programming, work with alumni and industry to secure external resources, and able to establish community-based partnerships for ongoing collaboration – all to enable excellence and propel the overall advancement of the School, the institution, and the students that LIU serves.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Provide vision and oversight for the Schools of Nursing and all of its programs by managing short- and long-term goals and objectives, planning, and outcomes to enhance operational effectiveness and promote scholarly advancement and clinical excellence.
- Serve as the primary advocate for the Schools with internal and external constituencies with the goal of building sustainable collaborations and networks that will elevate the School on the local, national and international level.
- Manage all aspects related to the staff and faculty recruitment and retention, including the hiring and evaluation of tenure track faculty and clinical and non-clinical adjunct instructors. This includes managing all critical faculty related processes such as workload allocation, course assignment and the Schools' academic review, promotion and tenure processes.
- Ensure that accreditation metrics and external reporting requirements are consistently met and that internal reports to the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and other key leaders are accurate and submitted in a timely manner.
- Manage the budget for the Schools and prepare annual budget projections to ensure that resources are appropriately aligned to meet strategic goals and to facilitate the day-to-day operations of the Schools.
- Work with faculty and various governing bodies, to maintain the highest academic quality and integrity of the School's curriculum in alignment with the Schools and university's strategic plan and overall mission.
- Work with faculty, chairs and program directors to maintain and enhance the academic rigor in all programs as necessary to achieve and maintain excellence in all academic programming and elevate student success in relevant credentialing and exam scores (NCLEX).
- Oversee the development and management of external partnership, as well as the process related to student clinical placements.
- Work with Academic Affairs and Budget personnel to oversee contract processes related to affiliation agreements with outside clinical agencies or any other agreements that may be made between the Schools and external parties.
- Work with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Admissions to maximize enrollment growth and increase student retention and graduation rates. This includes, engaging in direct contact with potential new students and ensuring appropriate School faculty representation at Admissions related Open Houses, recruitment related activities, or any other events where School representation is required and/or expected.
- Provide ongoing communication with and among faculty through structured regular meetings with School faculty and staff meetings.
- Provide oversight of program outcomes and evaluations through continuous review of program needs, student survey data, retention and graduation rates, testing scores, employment outcomes, etc.
- Promote academic and professional growth of School's faculty through the facilitation of critical research, publications, and presentations professional conferences and events of significant note, which will also serve to increase visibility for LIU and the Schools.
- Work directly with institutional advancement colleagues to engage alumni, benefactors and granting agencies in order to actively secure new funding streams to support the Schools' strategic goals and objectives, as well as the broader institutional mission.
- Forge programmatic connections with other units across campus to promote interprofessional training through the use of unique clinical educational facilities such as clinical simulation suites which are located in Post and Brooklyn.
- Provide leadership on all fronts as necessary to further elevate the School's position and standing as a leading institution in the field of Nursing that provides a highly sought after workforce for the benefit of our region and the nation.
