This position begins in Spring 2024
Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Licensed Vocational Nursing Instructor commencing with the 2023-2024 academic year. Nursing faculty members in the Nursing program are directly responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives of the Vocational Nursing program and ensuring program compliance with the California Board of Vocational Nursing. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and clinical nursing, and include meeting student retention goals, participating in educational planning; evaluating student performance; motivating and advising students; and generating program reports as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FULL-TIME FACULTY VOCATIONAL NURSING PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR:

  • Teach classes in this discipline/area
  • Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-major students
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum
  • Plans learning experiences (i.e., classroom activities, pre/post conferences, and clinical assignments for student supervision, evaluation, and feedback conferences)
  • Prepares written evaluation materials (i.e., syllabi, tests, handouts, etc.) for submission and duplication in a timely manner
  • Requests and submits complete descriptions of equipment and supplies needed for activities (clinical lab supplies, AV material, course budgets, etc.)
  • Manages schedule to ensure regular and prompt attendance at all required course activities, committee and faculty meetings
  • Plans and schedules teaching and clinical/lab activities for curriculum courses and teaching
  • Prepares formal and informal reports as required for Systematic Program Evaluation governing institution, and governmental and accrediting agencies
  • Controls and monitors ongoing instructional activities and systems in order to maintain adherence to prescribed standards and student evaluation
  • Holds students accountable for acquiring competency in their performance, and assists students in re-mediation to acquire and maintain competence
  • Motivates students through instructional and counseling activities toward high levels of contribution to the discipline. Conducts conferences with students concerning academic and clinical competence and progress
  • Records and maintains data for student records, grades, accreditation, program compliance with the California Board of Vocational Nursing Requirements and school studies (i.e. test item banks, course evaluation portfolio, annual course reports, etc.)
  • Coordinates and manages the course implementation in consultation with members of the teaching team
  • Effectively and Collegially work with other faculty and staff to meet program goals and objectives
  • Participates in scholarship through teaching, application, and the integration, and discovery of knowledge
  • Participates in recruitment and retention programs
  • Participates with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Uses the results to improve teaching and learning
  • Participates in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities
  • Undertakes the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member
  • Participate in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities for students

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities
  • Knowledge of current practices in distance education including learning management systems such as Canvas
  • Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience

OR

  • Valid California Community College Instructor Credential

OR

  • The equivalent

Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's

Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.

(Note: A bachelor's in nutrition, dietetics, or dietetics and food administration, and certification as a registered dietitian, is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

  • Current unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license or licensed vocational nurse (LVN) license required from the California state board of nursing

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned doctorate in nursing, education, or related field
  • Additional nursing experience beyond what is required for the minimum qualifications · Familiarity with clinical partners' hospitals
  • Ability to be approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians as an instructor
  • Previous experience working with Vocational Nursing Students
  • Willingness to make load teaching in the Certified Nursing Assistant Program, if required
  • Clinical experience in Medical/Surgical Nursing preferred
  • Willingness to work with and support students who have diverse learning needs · Ability to teach through a variety of mechanisms to effectively instruct students


THE ASSIGNMENT:
Ten Months, 100% – Tenure-track position beginning Spring 2024

Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching; five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities. The College has two 16-week semesters and offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours. Faculty may be offered the opportunity to teach classes during winter and summer intersessions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful completion of livescan clearance and TB screening
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109
  • Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member
  • Board of Trustees approval
