Summary

Golden West College (GWC) is seeking a full-time, equity-minded, tenure track faculty member in nursing commencing with the 2024 fall semester. In addition to teaching, this assignment includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or off-campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Golden West College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting individualized student and employee goals through the work of accounting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Provide instruction in nursing in accordance with established course outlines.
  2. Provide leadership in the development and revision of the nursing curriculum responsive to the students served.
  3. Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
  4. Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  5. Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  6. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  8. Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  9. Participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
  10. Take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, D.E.I.A.

Must meet the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), which include:

  1. A master's or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes course work in nursing, education or administration ; and
  2. Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing area to which he or she is assigned, which can be met by:
  3. (A) One (1) year's continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area; or
    (B) One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency; and
  4. Completion of at least one (1) year's experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.

ANDAll candidates must demonstrate evidence of a responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Recent experience working with underrepresented students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and the field of nursing shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
  2. Willingness to examine and re-mediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
  3. Ability to work with computers and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate).
  4. Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  5. Recent community college or lower division clinical and/or teaching experience.
  6. Current or recent experience, within the last 5 years, in patient care and in nursing education.
  7. Has other nursing and teaching experience in Obstetrics or Mental Health or Pediatrics in addition to Medical Surgical and Geriatrics.

Pay Philosophy

For a full-time, tenure-track Instructor, a maximum starting range of $66,190 to $112,846 is offered, based on the 2023-2024 salary schedule of $66,190 to $157,799. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,861 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
