Nursing (Women's Health – OB/GYN) Instructor (Full-Time Tenure Track Faculty)

The candidate will also be an ally and champion for equity, inside and outside of the classroom, and teaches to ensure all students succeed.

Position:
Under the general supervision of the Division Dean, the Women's Health – OB/GYN instructor's responsibilities include teaching Women's Health, OB/GYN and general nursing content in the nursing program. The instructor will be responsible for the Women's Health and OB/GYN curriculum and collaborating with the program and college in meeting accreditation standards. The responsibility of the instructor will be to teach the lecture, skills lab, clinical, high fidelity simulation, and community opportunities within the specialty and within general nursing courses. The instructor is expected to incorporate innovative teaching and learning methodologies that includes technology. Participation as a full-time faculty member in program, division and campus-wide activities is required and may include managing students in volunteering activities, engaging with community partners, outreach to new and existing clinical partners, overseeing nursing students in campus wide and community events, mentoring students in club activities, and mentoring new faculty. The nursing program is face-to-face only, yet the instructor is required to have or acquire online competencies related to hybrid/online instruction. The teaching assignment may include evening and/or weekends with partnering clinical facilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach assigned courses in the Nursing Department, and employ learner-centered instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter.
  2. Teach Women’s Health, OB/GYN, and Nursing in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.
  3. Implement and collaborate with nursing faculty and the program in meeting Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) standards.
  4. Establish and maintain relationships with new and existing clinical sites; meet with didactic and clinical faculty for program development.
  5. Explore outreach opportunities that serve a wider range of pre-/post-RN students.
  6. Understand the importance of holding oneself accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices.
  7. Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  8. Initiate and enhance institutional and teaching practices and aim to create a culturally responsive and equity driven teaching environment.
  9. Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
  10. Assist students with their assignments by holding required office hours and attend department/division meetings.
  11. Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
  12. Develop effective online course materials, and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.
  13. Participate in the leadership of discipline specific learning communities.
  14. Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
  15. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student-learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
  16. Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
  17. Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
  18. Oversee student volunteering activities and participate in community outreach programs such as Science Night, Flu and/or Covid Vaccination Clinics, Scholarship Partner Dinners, Nursing Week Celebration, and other activities that may be developed.
  19. Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human difference.
  20. Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.
  21. Create an equity based and welcoming classroom environment.
  22. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
  23. Assist Nursing Program Director in accreditation requirements, program improvement, and curriculum development.
  24. Participate in Bi-Annual Nursing Graduation Pinning, College Graduation Ceremony, and Student Awards Presentations.
  25. Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, online via the eCampus, and/or other designated locations.
  26. Perform other duties as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Teaching experience in Registered Nursing at the post-secondary level.
  2. Courses in Nursing Education at a Master’s level and/or Certified Nurse Educator from National League for Nursing (NLN).
  3. Advanced certification in Obstetrics, Women’s Health, or related nursing specialty.
  4. Familiarity with pedagogy in Nursing Education.
  5. Evidence of a willingness to develop new knowledge and clinical skills as required by a dynamic curriculum, which is highly responsive to a rapidly changing and demanding health care job market.
  6. Demonstrated pattern of participation in Registered Nursing professional growth activities.
  7. Evidence of moral and ethical standards and professionalism.
  8. Experience in using innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement and learning.
  9. Demonstrated enthusiasm for profession; high level of motivation; willingness to adapt to change.
  10. Experience creating socially conscious syllabi, equitable classroom materials and inclusive pedagogical practices to promote an inclusive environment.
  11. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one’s relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students; and a commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.
  12. Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
  13. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  14. Promote excellence and innovation.
  15. Ability to work successfully in a team environment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in nursing from an accredited college/university, which includes course work in field of study, with preparation for teaching clinical nursing as related to this job description. Equivalencies considered as approved by the Board of Registered Nursing;ANDCompletion of at least one (1) year experience teaching courses related to nursing OR a course which includes Practice in Teaching Nursing (submit official course description to verify course content or documented equivalent experience);ANDDirect patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in Maternal Child Health/Obstetrics nursing which can be met by:

  1. One (1) year continuous, full-time, or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in obstetric/women’s health nursing OR
  2. One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrates clinical competency;

ANDA current, valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California, or eligibility for license, and BRN faculty approval;ANDCommitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests;ANDMust have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

The District participates in a group health plan and offers a variety of medical plans. Dental is offered through Delta Dental, Vision offered through Vision Service Plan (VSP), and Life insurance through UNUM.

Medical: Enrollment in medical coverage through the District is optional. For faculty that choose to enroll in one of the offered medical plans, the District currently provides an allowance of $1,200 per month to offset the cost of the medical benefits premium.

Dental, Vision and Life Insurances: The District provides for and fully pays the premiums for you and your family for dental and vision, and the employee premium for life insurance. Enrollment in Dental, Vision and Life insurances are mandatory.

Long-term Disability (LTD) and Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The District provides for and fully pays the premiums for long-term disability for you and EAP for you and your family.

Other employee paid benefits (optional): Voluntary additional life insurance; IRC Section 125 Flexible Medical and Dependent Care spending plans; 403(b) and 457(b) Tax Shelter Annuity plans; 403(b) Roth IRA plan.

Retirement: Ohlone participates in the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS) and the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS). Candidates hired on or after January 1, 2013 are subject to restrictions imposed by PEPRA.

Sick Leave: One day per month, accumulating indefinitely, if unused. All other Education Code leave benefits apply.

Sabbatical Leave: After 6 consecutive years of employment with the district you will be eligible for sabbatical leave. You will receive 100% pay for one semester leave and 70% for an academic year.

Enrollment Fee Waiver: Employees and their qualified dependents receive enrollment fee waiver for courses taken at Ohlone College.

Certificated employees belong to the United Faculty of Ohlone (UFO).
